About Us
Welcome The Chartered Institute of Power Engineers of Nigeria
As engineers and practitioners, we have made it our mission to support the professional development of our members by registering them, promoting our ongoing professional development (which includes technical training programmes and other initiatives), developing codes and standards, advocating for change, and engaging in research and development.

WHO WE ARE
In 2009, a group of engineering personnel of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) formed the Nigerian Electric Power Engineering Professionals to cater to their members’ welfare and professional development.
As the association gained prominence, the founders deemed it expedient to engender a broader and more robust engagement platform aimed at ensuring that only qualified Engineers drive the management of all government Power establishments in Nigeria; hence, in 2016, they sought affiliation with the Nigerian Society of Engineers( NSE) and later morphed into the Nigerian Institution of Power Engineers of Nigeria (a Division of Nigerian Society of Engineers). It later changed to the Nigerian Institute of Power Engineers upon its registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in 2019.
Later in 2019, the Institute approached the National Assembly with a bill seeking legislative approval and recognition as a Chartered Professional body to be charged with the responsibility to regulate, control and determine the standard of knowledge and skills for persons seeking to ply their trade in Nigerian Power sector and also for members of the Institute who would be seeking to be Chartered Power Engineers, the Institution capstone professional qualification.
The bill establishing the Chartered Institute of Power Engineers of Nigeria (CIPEN) became an Act of the National Assembly when President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, signed it into law on May 11, 2023, as the Chartered Institute of Power Engineers of Nigeria Act, 2023 (Act No 50, 2023 LFN )
The Institute had its first executive council election on October 14, 2023, and the technical societies’ chairpersons election were elected online between November 7-9, 2023.
The Institute and the first governing Council members were inaugurated on November 16, 2023, by a Judge of the Federal High Court.
The Chartered Institute of Power Engineers of Nigeria, hereinafter referred to as CIPEN, was established by the Chartered Institute of Power Engineers of Nigeria Act, 2023 (LFN) to regulate, control, and determine the standards of knowledge by people seeking to become Chartered Power Engineers; and for related matters and also to determine the standards of knowledge -and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the power engineering profession and raising those standards as circumstances may permit.
The CIPEN Act affirms the Institute as the sole regulatory and professional institution for power engineering practitioners. It empowers and accords power engineering professionals with the status of subject matter experts in Nigeria’s power sector.
The Institute is here to professionalize power engineering practice by upscaling knowledge, enforcing professional standards, and compelling the observance of professional ethics and conduct. It aims to revolutionize power engineering practice in Nigeria.
CIPEN’s primary objective is to foster professionalism across the power engineering sector, spanning areas such as Gas-to-Power, Power Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Energy Markets, and more. By expanding and solidifying power engineering practitioners’ knowledge, competencies, and skill sets, CIPEN ensures adherence to the highest standards of professional ethics and conduct.
Section(2) of the CIPEN Act, 2023, compels persons employed in any public or private sector of the Nigerian Electric Power Sector to register in the appropriate professional category. Section 2(3) mandates all corporate bodies or firms in the Nigeria Electric Power Sector to register their staff with the Institute to foster professionalism and ethical standards. It is, therefore, illegal to hold yourself or your firm out as a practitioner in the Electric Power Sector without membership of the CIPEN and be so appropriately licensed as a power engineering professional or firm in the sector.
Membership in CIPEN offers numerous benefits, including access to a network of industry professionals, opportunities for professional development, and recognition as a trusted power engineering practitioner.
