From The Desk of the President

CIPEN President

I especially and warmly welcome my esteemed professional colleagues, friends of the Institute, and the public to the CIPEN website.

The Chartered Institute of Power Engineers of Nigeria (CIPEN) is a professional body empowered by its establishment Act to promote professionalism in the practice of Power Engineering in Nigeria.

It is the voice of power engineering practitioners in Nigeria. CIPEN’s forerunner, the Nigerian Institute of Power Engineers (NIPE), has been around since 2009, serving as a rallying point for Power System Engineers(PSE) and practising professionals. The emergence of CIPEN in Nigeria as a practitioner regulatory and professional…

Institution is a game changer as it sets out to positively impact the quality of power engineering practice in Nigeria, West Africa, and globally. The quality of any nation’s power sector practitioners defines the level of development of any modern economy”. Our goal is to bring professional capacity, credibility, and competence to bear in the power sector through activities that support practitioners’ competency development and achieve an efficient Power Industry.

The Institute’s core mandate, as encapsulated in the Act establishing the Chartered Institute of Power Engineers of Nigeria, CIPEN (Act of Parliament No 50 of 2023), empowered it to regulate, control, and determine the standards of Knowledge and Skills to be attained by people seeking to become Chartered Power Engineers and by persons seeking to become members of the Power Engineering profession and for related matters. This is noteworthy as the inputs and outputs of…

the Institute’s activities directly impact individual practitioners and all Power Engineering Firms; this ultimately confers on the Institute the monicker of ‘subject matter expert’ and a critical stakeholder in NESI and the Electric Power sector (EPS). As you navigate through the information on this platform, you will become conversant with our history, activities, goals, aspirations, and successes recorded to position power engineering professionals in Nigeria, Africa, and globally. The Institute membership base of registered personnel of NIPE, our precursor body, was about a thousand hundred at the start of CIPEN. At the same time, it was estimated that the total number of power engineering professionals or practitioners in Nigeria is more than seventy thousand. Sensitisation and membership mobilisation are our subsequent phases to get everyone on board as licensed professionals. As of today, the Institute has established a membership presence in more…

than Forty-six locations across the length and breadth of the Nigerian federation and has interfaced with over Fifty stakeholders, too.

The Chartered Institute of Power Engineers of Nigeria is anchored on the Institute’s ten technical societies, and the ten technical societies cover every segment of the electric power sector value chain. They are, respectively, the Institute’s knowledge repositories and R&D  centres in their respective focal areas,

Membership in CIPEN is open to all practising power engineering professionals in Nigeria who meet the requisite academic skillset and competencies for the membership category and the practising license being sought.

Membership in CIPEN offers numerous benefits, including access to a network of industry professionals, opportunities for professional development, and recognition as a trusted power engineering practitioner.

CIPEN will establish a formal Power System Engineering Institution to train power sector professionals for licentiate examinations, including pupillage training for the power sector.

The CIPEN Academy will supervise the Continuing Professional Education Programme or competency development programme and broad-based knowledge and skills acquisition for members (Conferences, seminars, workshops, etc.)

CIPEN would partner with the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) in all ramifications and with other Institutions that advance knowledge and skills for power system professionals as long as their curriculum aligns with upscaling knowledge.

Sincerely in CIPEN,

Engr Israel E. Abraham, CPEng FCIPE REng
President & Chairman of CIPEN Governing Council.
